Location: Zoom meeting room

Present: Nina, Paula, Susan, Allen, Ginger, and Joyce

Discussion today rambled from Covid-19 to the invasion of Ukraine until Ginger focused us on her upcoming trip to Italy. We jealously listened to her planned itinerary and were very impressed with all that she plans to see and do.

We had a pleasant, jovial meeting that focused on Paula’s unique collection of books for Latinists starting with The Latinist. (Click here for the review in The Washington Post.) Paula also recommended The Thousand Ships by N. Haynes; Steven Saylor’s latest, Dominus, Lindsey Davis’s latest, Comedy of Terrors, and The Man with Two Names by Vincent B. Davis II. Wow!

Paula is even up-to-date with young adult classical fun reads! 1) Odd Gods which takes place in Mt. Olympus Middle School and has some cool wordplay in character names 2) The Pig Scrolls, a graphic novel by a pig based, need I say “loosely”, on the Odyssey, and 3) Naked Statues, Fat Gladiators, and War Elephants, a collection of amusing facts by Garrett Ryan who speaks of his extensive research here. Susan recommended Speak Latin which is a small, handy collection of conversational phrases, very boring compared to Paula’s reading! There was, of course, discussion of Dame Mary Beard’s works, interviews, YouTubes, and new two-part documentary, “Forbidden Art”, that aired Feb 3 & 10 on BBC2. We look forward to being able to access that program in the USA in the near future.

Susan suggested, and all agreed, to meet in person and/or on Zoom at the same time, 11 a.m., four times per annum - on the Ides of the months that fall on the 15th, viz., March, May, July, and October. Beware of … and plan to meet next on … the Ides of March!
