Stephanie Spaulding

DSA 2023

According to the by-laws of the Classical Association of Connecticut, we exist for three reasons:

To foster excellence in the teaching of classical languages and civilizations within the schools, colleges, and universities of the State of Connecticut; to advance the study of classical languages and civilizations and research therein, the diffusion of knowledge thereof, and the continuing education of teachers of such subjects; and to sponsor student activities pertaining to classical languages and civilizations. The year’s awardee of the ClassConn Distinguished Service Award has distinguished herself in each of these categories.

Her on-going and decades-long work with the North American Cambridge Classics Project has led her, using grant money, to hike along Hadrian’s Wall and explore Masada and Qumran, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered, any many other distant locales. She returns from these journeys and shares her experiences with her students, offering vivid first-hand knowledge and understanding of the places featured in their textbooks – closing what can often seem like an insurmountable distance of time and space…because she herself has walked those roads. And, she shares with other teachers her knowledge and dedication to both her discipline and to the craft of teaching through lectures and essays posted on the NACC website and other platforms.

She has served as editor of the ClassConn newsletter, helping to spread the word of the good work of our organization.

To quote our out-going President, she is “thoughtful, challenges others to think more deeply, and is deeply committed to her growth as a teacher and a human being.”

For her own excellence in each of those categories, the winner of this year’s Distinguished Service Award is Stephanie Spaulding of Hamden Hall Country Day School.
